the People: Outline Guide (The Working Time Directive 2)
Breaks:
The Regulations entitle everyone to a minimum break of 11
hours in each period of 24 hours. Time spent travelling between base and home
is part of the break, but if you are working away from base, time spent between
the shooting location and the hotel or other accommodation will probably count
as working time.
Similarly, everyone is entitled to a minimum break of 24
hours in each period of seven days. In practice, because of the entitlement
to the 11-hour rest period, the minimum weekly break is 24+11 = 35 hours.
Each working period of six hours or more must, under the
Regulations, include a break or breaks defined by collective agreement or,
in the absence of a collective agreement, one of at least 20 minutes. The
industry agreements in force in the UK television industry provide for daily
breaks longer than this minimum, and for more than one break during particularly
long working periods. If, therefore, you engage people to work on your production
under the terms of the appropriate industry agreement, and abide by its terms,
you will be in no danger of infringing the Regulations.
