Managing Media Projects - Managing the Idea : Industry Agreements (Actors, In-House BBC 4)

The agreement also gives the BBC the right to make a limited number of "out-of-time" repeats (ie repeat transmissions more than three years after the first transmission), on payment of fees which vary according to the time of the repeat transmission (peak or off-peak) and the age of the programme.

Payment of the programme fee also gives the BBC the right to sell the programme in other markets, at home and abroad, subject to further payments. These are of two kinds.

For programmes made by the BBC Television Drama Group and Regional Drama departments, by the Light Entertainment department, and for other drama programmes including those made by the Schools and Children’s departments, payment takes the form of a royalty: 17% of gross sales revenue, divided between the artists concerned in proportion to their original aggregate fees.

As an alternative to the royalty system, the agreement allows for pre-purchase of various packages of rights for specified percentages of the actor’s original fee. These arrangements are available where the programme is a co-production between the BBC and a partner or partners.
