Jim Knight has worked extensively with
Monkey World near Bovington to minimise
the use of primates in laboratory experimentation.
Most recently, on 18th July, Jim presented
founder Dr Alison Cronin with the hugely
prestigious Universities Federation for
Animal Welfare Award, in recognition for
their macaque enclosure, built to house
and rehabilitate 17 monkeys which had been
kept in solitary confinement at a British
laboratory and used for research - some
for over 20 years.
Jim also attended the RSPCA primate campaign
launch at the Centre last December. As he
said at the time, Over recent years
the Government has made some landmark achievements
including a ban on the use of great apes
and a ban on the use of wild-caught primates
but I now want Government to review the
use of primates for experiments."
In autumn 2002 Elliot Morley, Minister
for Environment, accepted Jim's invitation
to officially open a new £2 million
orangutan centre at Monkey World.
Jim has also supported several Early Day
Motions on animal rights issues.
