This area can be fairly complex, so it is a
good idea to have a basic knowledge about the legalities of working
practices if you are expected to draw up a contract. At a basic
level, contracts should state specific roles and requirements and
should include the dates during which the work on the production
will take place and the fee involved. Performances should always
be monitored against the contract during production to ensure that
the person employed is fulfilling their role.
Contracts are issued to protect both parties.
Larger broadcast companies tend to use standard terms of agreement
when contracting people, but for freelancers or independents it
will be necessary to draw up individual contracts.
Organisations such as PACT
offer advice on union contracts, and there are pre-determined
agreements between organisations such as the Musician's
Union, Equity,
The Performing
Rights Society (PRS) and BECTU.
