Digital Audio Broadcasting

Digital audio broadcasting transmits interference free sound of cd quality. Analogue will never be of the same standard and digital radio will replace AM and FM stations.

Digital radio allows easy tuning and will automatically switch to the most powerful signal without interruption for the best possible sound quality. Pay Radio provides subscription services for live concerts and a digital radio can be programmed to select a particular music format. Music can be requested by song title, lyrics or artists and services such as traffic and weather reports can be selected automatically. Paging and text services are possible through digital radio and it will be possible to obtain complementary information about products.

Looking to the future, consumers may be able to transmit and receive data downloads and fax transmissions through digital radios and opportunities exist for new revenues through data transmission services using LCD displays. It may also be possible to download special product discount information onto a card, which can then be taken to a shop where the discount can be redeemed on that product.

Digital radio is an intelligent communications medium that offers more services than conventional analogue technology. It receives both satellite and terrestrial based signals and as manufacturing costs fall, digital radios will be very affordable and efficient devices for the consumer. For producers digital audio broadcasting can reduce equipment costs as digital units could be shared between the stations that use them.
