Commissioning

Proposal

There are two main avenues you can take when submitting a proposal; one is to submit it in writing and the other is to submit an initial proposal which you will then be invited to pitch for if it has potential. It really depends on the commissioning company and how they prefer to approach this process, but before submitting your final proposal ensure that you comply with company submission guidelines.

When writing a proposal there are some basic guidelines which you should adhere to:

  • submit no more than two pages of A4
  • write clearly and concisely
  • sell your idea in the first line
  • do thorough research and include all relevant elements
  • if you have to submit a proposal, unless otherwise stated, send your proposal through the post (sometimes submission may be via e-mail)
  • do not call the company to follow up the proposal, wait for them to contact you
  • send your CV with the proposal if appropriate but do not send a tape in the first instance before checking
  • if you are unsure what to include for a specific submission, check with the company guidelines first as these are well publicised
  • find out what the budget is before embarking on your proposal
  • find out all you can about the company and watch what they produce
  • if you have any specific queries, contact someone at the company before you submit your proposal
