Constraints |
Producers and designers face many constraints when researching,
the most common being cost implications. When calculating timescales
ideally time would be allowed for research, but if the project
turnaround is fast or money tight, this is not always possible.
There are cases where a project may not be worth pursuing until
the research is in place, because the needs of the target audience
will not have been sufficiently identified. Without this valuable
information the project will be pointless, as you won't know if
you are reaching them.

"If you're quite clear that the only
way that you're going to do what you need to do is to
get the research and the client can't fund it, then
we would stay away. Grant Campbell |

Below are some of the main research sources and the implications
of using them:
Research Source |
Implications |
Researching on the Internet |
No editorial control therefore reliability of information
questionable. Sources should be checked. |
Market Research and opinion polls |
Sources may be unreliable so validity of information should
be confirmed |
Research into archive material, library material or music
and artwork |
Copyright constraints: Licences and agreements need to
be in place to publish/broadcast any work that belongs to
someone else |
Researching locations |
Can be time consuming if there is distance involved. Location
may effect budget, permissions need to be obtained at research
phase. |
Research using low bandwidth connections |
May need to re-think strategy in delivering multimedia
products |
Research into delivery of multimedia products |
Concerns surrounding changing browsers, reliability of
user research, restrictive colour palettes |
Research into software /hardware capabilities |
May be problems transferring design to screen. Will affect
design at planning stage. |

Limitations can force a producer or designer to
streamline their ideas, but creativity can also thrive on constraints.
