Answers

1. How do I connect headphones to the camcorder?

Ans: Connect the docking station to the camera and then you can monitor the sound through the headphones socket on the docking station.

2. Why do I have black or brown outlines round my characters when I film a blue screen?

Ans: This is all to do with the compression schemes used in Digital Video. Because Digital Video relies on taking more luma samples than chroma samples (2:1 I believe) the Fourier type algorithms used to compress the image will lead to distortion around areas of high luminance contrast (i.e. a light character against a blue background). This is because the best fit curve for the samples will underspill and overspill at areas of high contrast leaving you with a dark outline on the outside and very often a bright outline on the inside of your character. In calculating luminance the camera performs an operation simliar to the human eye which is more responsive to Green than it is to red and to red than it is to blue. This means we end up with something like Luminance = 0.6*Green + 0.3* Red + 0.18*Blue. Obviously this means that a blue screens luminance will be much lower than an equally well lit green screen, around 3 times as low. So the contrast between the bright character (if it is lit properly) and the blue screen is that much higher than if you use a green screen. Basically DVCPro and MiniDv in particular are inadequate for professional chromakeying but to get the best results either use a green screen or an overlit blue screen or even use dim lights on your character! None of which may be ideal solutions.

3. Do I record in LP or SP? Surely LP gives me more recording time?

ANS: Although you can record in LP it is highly inadvisable. The reason being all the equipment needed to play back your footage in the post production phase does not support long play. Sorry!

4. Why canīt I manually focus the camera when itīs in manual mode?

ANS: Make sure you press the `manual focusī button on the front of the camera, AS WELL AS putting the camera into manual mode. The display in the LCD will change from `AFī to `MFī.

5. Why does the camera switch off after six minutes?

ANS: This is to protect the tape inside. In certain conditions the VTR heads continue to rotate against the tape surface, wearing away the oxide coating. To prevent this damaging the tape, it will switch off after about six minutes BUT ONLY IF YOU DONīT PRESS ANY BUTTONS. Itīs like a screensaver kicking in after a certain amount of time on your computer. A way around it is to keep the compartment door open, with no tape inside. Make sure no dust or other particles can get it though.
